taking another step to restrict russia and its finances. >> access to s.w.i.f.t. s.w.i.f.t., based in belgium, is a messaging system between more than 11,000 banks and financial institutions in more than 200 countries and territories. loses that access would make it hard for russian banks to operate internationally. meanwhile ukraine is outgunned, but so far the country has held on to its capital for four days. last night ukraine's forces say they managed to repel multiple attacks from russia. official reports say close to 200 people have died in the invasion, including three children. well, tonight, kyiv remains under a mandatory curfew. there are reports of intense street fighting in and around the city and air raid sirens have been heard in and around the night. >> terry and audrey, good

evening to you. these new economic sanctions on behalf of the united states, canada, and the european union are an attempt to cripple russia's economy, as the russian leader vladimir putin shows no signs of letting up on this assault on ukraine. >> ukrainian forces continue to hold the capital city of kyiv as the country endures a fourth straight night of russian military assault. those who remain in the country are sheltering in their homes or hiding in subway stations, now makeshift bomb shelters. in frequent social media posts, the country's president is urging civilians to take up arms against the russians, insisting, we will win. >> today in the kyiv, the putin will meet hell. >> joining the fight in the streets, ukraine's former president. >> this is our soil. this is our country. this is our people. and putin has nothing to do here. get out from ukraine, mr. putin.

>> the russians insist they're targeting military infrastructure, but images from ukraine show otherwise. in kyiv an apartment building hit by a russian missile. in kharkiv, an unexploded shell in a playground. >> the russian troops continue on military infrastructure and civilian objects more and more. >> tens of thousands have fled ukraine, some walking for miles to reach border crossings in poland and romanian. >> right now russian forces come and every day. >> in cities across the u.s. and around the world, people are taking to the streets to protest the russian invasion and to show support for ukrainians who are now in the fight of their lives. >> and today the state department has released another $350 million in military aid to ukraine. additionally, the netherlands

and germany have now agreed to send anti-tank weapons and missiles to ukraine to help in its defense. live in washington, i'm chris pallone, terry and audrey, back to you. people continue to show support for ukraine. our cameras caught protests in washington, times square, paris, and israel, just a few places people are calling for help for ukraine to survive this invasion. and hundreds gathered for a rally in san francisco as well. you can see them right here meeting near the city's ferry building today. many held ukrainian flags and signs saying, stop putin. some of the organizers and protesters have close ties to ukraine and say this is a gut wrenching time for them. >> well, my heart is hurting and all i can do is just to help with fundraising, with raising awareness to american people, to all the people of the world, you know, to fight against the aggression of putin's regime. >> and organizers say they've been raising funds to send to

ukraine. but they say the best way to end the invasion is to have other countries become more united against russian aggression. youtube has announced it's blocking ads from russian state media pages. similar to what facebook's parent company did just yesterday. speaking of cutting off russian revenue, the governor of new hampshire signed an executive order demanding the state stop selling russian liquor. asking retailers and restaurants to voluntarily remove products from their shelves. local non-profits and others from around the world are mobilizing to help ukrainians get through this war. we put together an article with information on how to do that. you can see it by going on nbcbayarea.com. click the link on the trending

bar. new at 5:00, more than a dozen people had to be rescued from a san francisco apartment building after flames ripped through it this afternoon. that fire burned on the third and fourth floors of a building on howard street near 5th. 15 people rescued but eight suffered injuries and four had to be taken to the hospital. several cats and dogs were rescued. no word on how the fire started. while firefighters were responding to a fire in oakland, their truck crashed into an apartment building. it happened on the corner of grand avenue near perkins. firefighters say they swerved off the road trying to avoid a car in the intersection, but the cause of the crash is still under investigation. no one inside the building was hurt, but the crash ruptured a water main. we are following a developing story out of se lee nas where a police officer has been killed.

jorge david alvarado had worked for several years at the poe ma police department. deadly shooting happened around 11:00 last night during a traffic stop. it's not clear what led up to the gunfire or who shot first, but we do know that salinas is mourning its first active duty officer death in nearly 80 years. >> officer alvarado is a friend to all of us. so, last night the police department lost a son. the community lost a hero. >> alvarado was 30 years old. the gunman has been arrested. today in oakland, the celebration of the first oscar grant day. couple weeks ago, the city set aside a day to remember grant, who would have turned 36 years old tomorrow. christie smith has the story. >> this is part of oscar's legacy.

>> reporter: that's how wanda johnson described today's celebration, the first official oscar grant day held in oakland in her son's memory. >> wher excited about this day because it is a day we will continue to host every year. it will actually be on the 27th next year. >> reporter: the city council -- b.a.r.t. police officer who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter. video of the shooting led to protests in the community and discussions about police use of force. now, more than a decade later, this event celebrates grant's life and honors the work of his mother and her oscar grant foundation, which has worked for change. this community resource fair's goal is to uplift people and encourage them to work together to improve conditions in the community. >> so, we wanted to bring today, a day where we could come together and we can encourage

one another and we can give free food away. we can give student backpacks. we can give food away to the community. >> reporter: the lend a hand foundation was here to help. >> i'm really honored to be here. we got a found call asking us if we had any school supplies or anything we could give away today. and i said, yes we do. so, we were happy to load it up and bring it down. >> there were music performances and speakers. >> each year at oscar grant day -- >> reporter: grant's uncle shares his thoughts about the day and the importance of the community. >> it was a community that embraced us, prays with us, cried with us, went back and forth to court with us, but most importantly shot an im oscar grant. >> they will push to make it grow. >> what the grant family is doing in honor of oscar grant, their loved one, is marvelous. in the future it is going to help other youth.

some neighbors are fed up with the graffiti in san francisco so they're trying to move forward by cleaning it up themselves. you see the roads and barriers just covered with graffiti. the clean up did not take all that much organization. one man simply tweeted he was going to be bringing paint and

brushes up there and whoever wanted to help could meet him up there. >> there's so much going on. there's so much graffiti and dumping going on and crimes going on right now that we just took it upon ourselves to, you know, as citizens of this great city to do our part. >> people showed up for this. they said that the gang related graffiti gives tourists the wrong impression of san francisco and makes them feel unsafe. in the meantime, the search for lexus gabe near oakley continued today. the family says about 150 people showed up today to help find the 24-year-old. she was last seen in antioch about a month ago. dozens volunteered time. members of the class kids foundation are helping this weekend. another search is set for tomorrow. and in san francisco today, people from two different cultures came together to celebrate as one. take a look at this.

over the past few weeks many in the bay area have celebrated lunar new year and black history month. but today, one group combined both into one event. dozens showed up to watch a lineup of cross cultural performances. organizers say they believe events like these can bring unity to the city. >> we definitely want to see more of this happening throughout the rest of the city. i think when we align with other -- when we join together with other communities and build solidarity and build unity, it makes the community thrive more. >> so, this is an inaugural event. organizers hope to bring it back next year. a warning for anyone heading to the beach in the bay area. dangerous sneaker waves and strong rip currents. that warning remains in effect until tomorrow afternoon. we talk about it and this kind of thing, those things can be dangerous. those things can actually kill and they have killed. >> stlutly. you always have to be out there during this time. rob a little shroud i did out

there today. even sprinkles. >> we're seeing a little bit of that offshore. the morning temperatures felt like winter. just the fact we have not had any big storms really brunging us rain. but you've got clouds where we had temperatures in the low 60s. more cloud cover around the tri-valley at 56 degrees. those clouds will also keep our nighttime temperatures a little bit warmer tonight. 57 in walnut creek. towards the headlands there, to the northwest of san francisco, could see a few sprinkles underneath the clouds. storm ranger seeing a few returns higher in the atmosphere. but below that layer, the air is still pretty dry. so, this is the type of weather that usually supports brief light rain or a few sprinkles at times. i think the best odds for that are across the coastal mountains. the best rain producing clouds staying off to the north. and prepare to hear that as an

ongoing theme in the seven day forecast. here's the future cast. what we're expecting tonight and into tomorrow. it's that little corner of the bay area which looks to be the dividing line between who has the best chance of showers and who doesn't to the south. you can see that through the day tomorrow. during the day tomorrow we're going to see more sunshine as the clouds start to clear out from south to north. few showers possible here, north western sonoma county north ward. but the mix of high clouds and sunshine during the day tomorrow and tomorrow begins a warming trend over the next few afternoons. notice the morning temperatures. no 20s or low 30s. upper 30s to low 40s to start the morning. by lunchtime seeing mid 60s in san jose. and the santa clara valley, you might be close to low 70s for highs throughout the weekend. a little bit cooler throughout. low 06s a sign the west wind will be going from 15 to 25

miles per hour. likely to be a breezy and cool finish to the weekend. warmer temperatures for monday and tuesday. better chance of seeing a few showers on wednesday. but again not a lot of moisture expected of that system. another chance rolls in here on friday, which looks to be cooler. that's it. look at the time stamp up there, we're now heading into march with just a few scattered shower chances. san francisco temperatures are going to warm up. you're going to see numbers in the mid to upper 60s monday to tuesday. you'll see breezy conditions and cooling to wrap up the week. for inland locations, some low 70s tomorrow, mid 70s in reach monday and tuesday. then wednesday and friday there's the chance of showers. but let's quantify what we're talking about with showers here. and again, still that is the common theme. we're looking at light rain chances out of that wednesday and friday set up. but temperatures cold enough, while we miss out on the big rain here, that will soon be big news for the sierra.

welcome back. on the tenth anniversary of trayvon martin's death, his mother told families, don't give up the fight for justin. martin was 17 at the time he was visiting his father in sanford, florida, when he was shot to death during a fight with neighborhood watch volunteer, george zimmerman. martin wasn't armed. zimmerman was found not guilty, the jury agreeing he acted in self-defense. today his mother joined reverend al sharpton and new york mayor eric adams, as the city remembered the anniversary of martin's death. she urged people who want justice for her family to keep fighting. >> we have to continue to hold people accountable for killing our loved ones. we have to continue to support our children, our families. we have to continue. we can't give up. we come too far. thank you.

>> former president obama also looking back on the death of trayvon martin. the case inspired mr. obama to create my brother's keeper, a community-based alliance with a mission to ensure all young people of color can reach their full potential. obama talked about how he saw himself and his children in the face of trayvon martin. >> trayvon martin wasn't so different from me. he looked like i did at the age of 15, 16, 17. even living in a relatively hospitable place like hawaii, there were many times where i'd get on the elevator and women would clutch their purse or i'd walk by a car and suddenly you'd hear the locks go down. >> former president said he's proud of how violence intervention, jobs, and education programs have taken root in communities all across the country. he is most inspired by the next generation of civil rights

the ship has two fuel tanks that can carry up to 700,000 gallons of diesel. they did have to wait a while for low tide to start removing the fuel so it wouldn't spill. it was a scam that just might have worked if not for a sharp u.p.s. employee in wisconsin. that employee stopping an elderly woman from sending thousands of dollars to a person she didn't know. she tried to send a next day air package but could not answer basic questions about who it was going to. she almost sent $22,000 cash. that's when the sheriff's office got involved. >> if you're sending a birthday present to someone, you know them and you have time to talk about what you're sending that's so nice or whatever. and there just -- all of that was just missing. >> it could be tough tracking down who exactly tried to scam that woman.

we have been seeing a lot of dramatic images continue to come out of ukraine, as russia's invasion continues. a lot of carnage, eight lot of destruction. but right now we're going to take a different look at what life is like for ukrainians right now. >> take a look at these photos. they show two babies who were born in a hospital bomb shelter in kherson. the minister wrote he is proud of the country's doctors, adding the ministry is doing the possible and impossible to ensure hospitals get what they need. a beautiful moment in a horrible
